Another hard hit to Jaxson Dart underscores tough return for Giants rookie quarterback

The return of Jaxson Dart to the New York Giants lineup didn’t provide much of a spark in their 33-15 loss to the New Englad Patriots. But the rookie quarterback came close to learning a valuable lesson the hard way. In his first game back since missing two games with a concussion, Dart scrambled out of the pocket to make a play. As he neared the Giants sideline, Patriots linebacker Christian Elliss delivered a hard but legal hit, briefly sending Dart airborne. He stayed in the game, but couldn’t do much to boost the offense in New York’s third game under interim coach Mike Kafka.

Ex-New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey’s comeback bid comes down to a runoff for Jersey City mayor

Former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey’s bid for a political comeback comes down to a runoff election against an opponent who has denounced him and his scandal-stained exit from the governor’s office as the epitome of “politics of the past.” McGreevey and James Solomon are the last candidates standing in Tuesday’s race for mayor of Jersey City. The community is sometimes referred to as New York City’s sixth borough. Like last month’s elections in New York and elsewhere, the race has focused heavily on the cost of living. No candidate tallied more than 50% of the vote in the Nov. 4 general election, when seven people were on the ballot. Solomon, a city council member since 2017, finished first. McGreevey placed second. Both are Democrats.

Tennessee voters make final call in House special election testing Trump’s power

President Donald Trump and Republicans are hoping to recover from recent losses as Tennessee voters choose a representative for the conservative 7th Congressional District on Tuesday. The special election follows Rep. Mark Green’s resignation this summer. The race has seen a surge in spending, with Republican Matt Van Epps receiving over $1 million from Trump-backing super PAC MAGA Inc. The House Majority PAC supported Democrat Aftyn Behn with $1 million. Democrats recently won big in New Jersey and Virginia, and a strong showing in Tennessee could boost them ahead of midterms next November. Both parties have focused on turnout, as early voting coincided with Thanksgiving week.

Abortion opponents coming before the Supreme Court in challenge to state investigation

A faith-based pregnancy center will come before the Supreme Court to challenge an investigation into whether it misled people to discourage abortions. Arguments are being heard Tuesday. The facilities often known as “crisis pregnancy centers” have been on the rise in the U.S., especially since the Supreme Court’s conservative majority overturned abortion as a nationwide right in 2022. In New Jersey, the Democratic attorney general sent a subpoena for donor information as it investigated whether centers there had misled people into thinking they offered abortions. First Choice Women’s Resource Centers pushed back, eventually asking the Supreme Court to let it challenge the subpoena before a federal judge.

LA Rams’ surprising loss to Panthers contained no reasons for concern, Sean McVay insists

The Los Angeles Rams’ tenure atop the NFC standings ended quickly with their most surprising loss of the season by far. Coach Sean McVay says he saw nothing to change his optimistic outlook for the rest of the season. The main areas in which the Rams struggled in their rain-soaked, 31-28 loss to the Carolina Panthers hadn’t been big areas of concern for McVay’s team before this game, and he doesn’t think the problems will linger. Two areas of struggle stood out: The Los Angeles defense’s inability to stop Carolina’s steady rushing attack, and Matthew Stafford’s three turnovers.

USA Gymnastics and Olympic sports watchdog failed to stop coach’s sexual abuse, lawsuits allege

Two gymnasts who say they were sexually abused at an elite academy in Iowa have filed lawsuits against the sport’s oversight bodies, alleging Sean Gardner preyed on girls despite repeated complaints about the coach’s behavior. The lawsuits, filed Monday, allege USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Center for SafeSport were told about “inappropriate and abusive behaviors” as early as December 2017 when Gardner was a coach in Mississippi. The lawsuits allege the organizations failed to “properly investigate,” revoke Gardner’s coaching credentials, report him to law enforcement or take other actions to protect athletes. Gardner was able to get a coaching job at Chow’s Gymnastics and Dance Institute in West Des Moines, Iowa, in 2018, where his abuse allegedly continued for years.

Luigi Mangione fights to exclude evidence from his trial in the killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO

Luigi Mangione has appeared in court seeking to bar evidence from his state trial over the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Among the evidence the 27-year-old Mangione’s lawyers want to prevent the Manhattan district attorney’s office from presenting to jurors is a handgun that prosecutors say matches the one used in the Dec. 4, 2024, killing and a handwritten notebook in which they say Mangione described his intent to “wack” a health insurance executive. Court officials say the hearings could take more than a week, meaning they would extend through Thursday’s anniversary of the attack. Mangione, the Ivy League-educated scion of a wealthy Maryland family, was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after the killing.

With Florida legends on hand, new Gators coach Jon Sumrall promises to ‘just win a whole bunch’

Florida introduced new coach Jon Sumrall to much less fanfare than Lane Kiffin’s arrival would have created. But the 43-year-old Sumrall might just be a better fit for a program in need of short-term success and long-term stability. Sumrall says taking over the Gators is “an exhilarating challenge.” Legends Urban Meyer and Steve Spurrier were on hand for his welcome party. Athletic director Scott Stricklin used Meyer, Spurrier and 1996 Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel to help land Sumrall, who agreed to a six-year, $44.7 million deal on Wednesday to leave Tulane and take over a Florida program that went 22-23 in four seasons before firing Billy Napier in October.

The experts say a fatal attack would have violated peacetime laws and those governing armed conflict. The White House confirmed Monday that a second strike was conducted in September against a vessel accused of trafficking drugs off the coast of Venezuela and insisted it was done “in self-defense” and in accordance with the laws of armed conflict. A report about the strike has spawned a new level of scrutiny from lawmakers.

Dr. Kirk Milhoan, who has blamed vaccines for causing cardiovascular disease, will become the new chair. Kennedy had previously fired the entire 17-member panel and replaced it with a group that includes several anti-vaccine voices. The committee is scheduled to meet later this week.

Andy Reid defiant as Chiefs’ playoff hopes dwindle after Thanksgiving loss to the Cowboys

Chiefs coach Andy Reid is defiant about his team’s playoff chances despite recent setbacks. The reigning AFC champions are 6-6 with five games left. Even if they win them all, they need help to reach the postseason. The Chiefs dropped to the 10th spot in the AFC playoff order after the Steelers lost to the Bills on Sunday. Reid emphasizes a fighting spirit, saying they’ll “go after you every game.” The Chiefs are third in the AFC West and nearly out of the division title race. Penalties and mental mistakes have been major challenges this season. Reid remains focused on the opportunities ahead, beginning Sunday night against Houston.

Massachusetts man goes on trial in death of wife who disappeared more than 2 years ago

A Massachusetts man has gone on trial in the death of his wife, Ana Walshe, who disappeared over two years ago. Her body has never been found. Prosecutors say Brian Walshe faces a first-degree murder charge. He previously agreed to plead guilty to misleading police and handling a human body illegally. Investigators say he made online searches about dismemberment and disposing of a body. Surveillance video showed a man resembling him throwing heavy trash bags into a dumpster. Authorities found items linked to Ana Walshe, including a hacksaw and her vaccination card. She had taken out a $2.7 million life insurance policy naming him as the beneficiary.

Catch of the year? Commanders’ Treylon Burks makes incredible 1-handed TD grab vs. Broncos

Treylon Burks made one of the best catches of the NFL season, a falling, one-handed grab in the corner of the end zone in the Washington Commanders’ 27-26 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday night. On third-and-goal from the 5 on Washington’s opening possession of the second half, Marcus Mariota took a shotgun snap and threw to Burks on a fade route. Covered closely by cornerback Riley Moss, Burks turned, leaped and extended his right arm, bringing the ball in as he fell to the turf. It was Burks’ second career touchdown and first since 2022.

AP Decision Notes: What to expect in Tennessee’s special congressional election

Less than a month after Democrats scored big victories in the Nov. 4 general election, voters in a heavily Republican Tennessee congressional district will fill a vacant seat Tuesday in the closely divided U.S. House. Republican Matt Van Epps and Democrat Aftyn Behn are the nominees to replace former GOP Rep. Mark Green. The district includes parts of heavily Democratic Nashville, although most of the district has elected only Republicans to Congress for more than a dozen years. Green and Donald Trump both carried the district in their 2024 races with about 60% of the vote.

AP Decision Notes: What to expect in Jersey City’s mayoral runoff election

Voters in New Jersey’s second-largest city will get another chance to elect a new mayor Tuesday in a runoff election. Councilman James Solomon and former Gov. Jim McGreevey were the top two vote-getters among seven candidates in the Nov. 4 general election. But neither Solomon nor McGreevey received the majority needed to avoid Tuesday’s runoff in Jersey City. Both are Democrats, although the office is nonpartisan. Solomon is a city council member and cancer survivor. McGreevey is attempting a political comeback more than two decades after resigning amid scandal. The winner will replace Mayor Steven Fulop, who ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

How to watch the last supermoon of the year

The last supermoon of the year will soon shine in December skies. When a full moon is closer to Earth in its orbit, a so-called supermoon happens. It makes the moon look up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than the faintest moon of the year. Thursday night’s supermoon is the last of three in a row this year. It can be glimpsed in clear night skies without any special equipment. But it can be tough to discern the subtle change with the naked eye. Supermoons happen a few times a year.
