No. 16 Texas spoils No. 3 Texas A&M’s perfect season 27-17, knocks Aggies out of SEC title game

Arch Manning threw a touchdown pass and ran for the clinching score late in the fourth quarter and No. 16 Texas beat No. 3 Texas A&M 27-17 on Friday night to spoil the Aggies’ undefeated season and knock them out of the Southeastern Conference championship game. Manning’s 29-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo in the third quarter gave Texas (9-3, 6-2 SEC, No, 16 CFP) a 13-10 lead. His 35-yard run up the middle on third down with 7:04 left put the Longhorns up 27-17. Texas kept alive any faint hopes of making the College Football Playoff for the third consecutive time. The Aggies (11-1, 7-1, No. 3 CFP) are all but assured their first playoff berth,

Texas A&M’s perfect season spoiled by rival Texas, but playoffs await for the Aggies

Texas beat Texas A&M again in a bitter rivalry. And while any loss to the Longhorns stings, this one is likely to stick with the Aggies for a long time. Texas’ 27-17 victory Friday night doomed the Aggies’ Southeastern Conference title hopes, spoiled their undefeated season, upended their potential seeding in the College Football Playoff and dinged quarterback Marcel Reed’s late-season surge as a Heisman Trophy contender. But the playoffs and a chance to play for a national title still await.

No. 2 Indiana pursuing bigger goals after retaining Old Oaken Bucket at Purdue

Indiana linebacker Aiden Fisher walked across the field Friday night, carrying the prized Old Oaken Bucket following a 56-3 rout of Purdue. It was a muted celebration, at least publicly, and with good reason. There’s still work, much more work, for the second-ranked Hoosiers to do if they want to accomplish more goals. But inside the locker room, it was a different story. Coach Curt Cignetti said players were smoking cigars and having a “good old time.” By Saturday night, though, Cignetti will have them back to work, focused on winning their first Big Ten title since 1967.

Antetokounmpo’s return from injury not enough to stop Bucks’ 7- game skid, NBA Cup elimination

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s return to the court was not enough for the Milwaukee Bucks to stop their longest losing streak since his rookie season. Restricted to 28 minutes after missing four games with a groin strain, Antetokounmpo had 30 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists Friday night, but the Bucks were eliminated from the NBA Cup with their 118-109 loss to the Knicks. It was Milwaukee’s seventh straight loss. It is the Bucks’ longest skid since dropping eight in a row March 11-24, 2014, when Milwaukee won 15 games after selecting Antetkounmpo in the 2013 draft.

The Mean Green have a shot at the College Football Playoff after clinching a spot in the American Conference championship game with a 52-25 victory over Temple. Word of Morris’ decision got to his players before he could deliver the news in a team meeting. He says he’ll have to live with that and is spending time trying to open up to his players to keep them on board. Morris says he’s coaching until the end of the season even if a CFP snub leads to a bowl without much at stake.

Ole miss coach Lane Kiffin emotional, non-committal about his future, following Egg Bowl triumph

Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin says he feels he like he has to make an announcement about his coaching future by Saturday and says doing so won’t be “as enjoyable as people think.” Kiffin, meeting with reporters after Mississippi’s 38-19 victory over Mississippi State on Friday, says he hasn’t made a decision. Kiffin says he’s leaning on mentors Pete Carroll and Nick Saban for advice in making his decision. Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter has asked Kiffin to decide by Saturday so the Rebels would know if they need to look for a new coach before it’s too late to attract a preferred candidate.

Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo will keep his job after Hurts, Barkley struggle again

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni says he’s sticking with embattled offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo. Philadelphia fans booed and chanted for Patullo to be fired throughout Friday’s 24-15 loss to the Chicago Bears. Sirianni says the Eagles’ problems on offense can’t all be blamed on Patullo’s play-calling. The coach says “it’s never about one person.” The Eagles ran just 17 plays and had two first downs in the first half against the Bears. They finished with 317 total yards to 425 for Chicago. Even the reliable tush push didn’t work, with Jalen Hurts losing a fumble on the once-unstoppable play.

Florida is moving on from Lane Kiffin and targeting Tulane’s Jon Sumrall, AP source says

A person familiar with the search says Florida is moving on from Lane Kiffin and targeting Tulane’s Jon Sumrall as its next head coach. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because negotiations are ongoing and nothing is finalized. Sumrall also is considered to be Auburn’s top target to replace Hugh Freeze. On3 first reported the Gators’ decision to move on from Kiffin, which came after getting lukewarm feedback from Kiffin’s camp in recent days. The 43-year-old Sumrall played linebacker at Kentucky (2002-04) and returned to his alma mater for a three-year stint before becoming Troy’s head coach in 2022.

Bears’ dominant rushing attack leads to their 5th straight win, 24-15 over reeling Eagles

The Chicago Bears have won their fifth straight game. They used a dominant rushing attack to beat the reeling Philadelphia Eagles 24-15 on Friday. Kyle Monangai rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown, and D’Andre Swift ran for 125 yards and a score for Chicago. Led by rookie coach Ben Johnson, the surprising Bears are alone in first place in the NFC North heading into a showdown at Green Bay next weekend. The Eagles seemingly had the NFC East wrapped up two weeks ago, only to suffer consecutive defeats that have them looking little like a Super Bowl contender.

The president explained his decision on social media by posting that “according to many people that I greatly respect,” Hernandez was “treated very harshly and unfairly.” Hernandez had been convicted last year in the U.S. of conspiring to import cocaine and two weapons counts. He had served two terms as the leader of the Central American nation of roughly 10 million people.

Trump says he wants to ‘permanently pause’ migration to the US from poorer countries

President Donald Trump says he wants to “permanently pause migration” from poorer nations and is promising to seek to expel millions of immigrants from the United States by revoking their legal status. He’s blaming immigrants for problems from crime to housing shortages as part of “social dysfunction” in America and demanding “REVERSE MIGRATION.” The comment came late Thursday in his most severe social media post against immigration since returning to the Oval Office in January. A day earlier, two National Guard members who were patrolling the streets of the nation’s capital under his orders were shot. College football mascots just as good at keeping their identities secret as firing up a crowd

Many college mascots are not permitted to reveal their identities until after their days of being a costumed performer have come to an end. Nicole Hurley spent two years as Cocky, the South Carolina Gamecock. She unmasked herself at the school’s commencement ceremony in the spring, rolling into the arena wearing a cap, gown and oversized yellow bird feet. Hurley is a member of an elite fellowship. Ex-mascots. The job is to fire up the crowd, bring a smile to a fan’s face and symbolically represent the university. And anonymity is the name of the game for many of them.

Eel populations are falling, and new protections were defeated. Japan and the US opposed them

Valuable eels are in decline all over the world, leading to a new push for restrictions on trade to try to help stave off extinction. Freshwater eels are critically important for the worldwide sushi industry, and some species have declined by more than 90% since the 1980s. Scientists say the eels have succumbed to a combination of dams, pollution, habitat loss, climate change and overfishing. The loss of eels motivated the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora to consider new restrictions to protect the wriggling fish. Members met in Uzbekistan this week and the proposed changes were shot down.

No. 1 Ohio State hoping No. 15 Michigan does not add to long list of upsets in The Game on Saturday

The Game has had many upsets, including last year when Michigan stunned Ohio State as nearly 20-point underdogs. The top-ranked Buckeyes don’t want the 15th-ranked Wolverines to add to the list on Saturday in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In terms of point spreads, last year’s upset was the largest since at least 1995. Michigan’s win in 1969 in coach Bo Schembechler’s debut season against mentor Woody Hayes was perhaps the most significant in the series. The 1973 game was memorable because the top-ranked Buckeyes settled for a famous 10-10 with the Wolverines and it inspired a documentary.
