UCLA star Lauren Betts’ status uncertain after sitting out win over Duke with arm injury

UCLA coach Cori Close is uncertain how long the Bruins might be without AP preseason All-American Lauren Betts, who missed Thursday night’s 89-59 victory over Duke in the third-place game of the Players Era Championship. Betts sat out with a left arm injury. One night earlier, Texas’ Madison Booker stripped the ball from Betts during a battle for possession and the two fell awkwardly. Betts’ left arm buckled beneath Booker, and the UCLA star briefly exited the game and went straight to the locker room. Betts returned to the court but finished with a season-low eight points for the third-ranked Bruins.

Bengals win in Burrow’s return, taking advantage of 5 Ravens turnovers in a 32-14 victory

Joe Burrow threw two second-half touchdown passes in his return for Cincinnati, and the Bengals snapped Baltimore’s five-game winning streak with a 32-14 victory over the fumble-prone Ravens. Baltimore lost three fumbles in the first half and turned the ball over five times in the game. Although the Bengals didn’t take full advantage of those miscues, Burrow and his receivers began to click in the final two quarters. Tanner Hudson made a terrific one-handed grab in the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown to put Cincinnati up 19-7, and after the Ravens answered with Keaton Mitchell’s 18-yard touchdown run, Burrow threw a 29-yard scoring pass to Andrei Iosivas in the third quarter.

Lamar Jackson the main culprit in Ravens’ turnover-laden 32-14 loss to Bengals

The Baltimore Ravens’ five-game winning streak has come to an inglorious end, and they’ve got only themselves to blame after an uncharacteristic, mistake-prone performance against the struggling Cincinnati Bengals. Baltimore lost four fumbles, including two by Lamar Jackson, who also threw an interception in a 32-14 defeat Thursday night. The Ravens were also flagged for seven penalties, most notably a pivotal pass-interference call on a third-down play that led to a Bengals touchdown for a 19-7 third-quarter lead. The Ravens’ first loss since Oct. 12 dropped them out of a first-place tie with Pittsburgh in the AFC North.

Here’s what to know about the federal ban threatening the market for THC-infused drinks and snacks

THC-infused drinks and snacks have soared in popularity as alcohol sales have declined in recent years. But the bill that ended the federal government shutdown this month includes a provision to ban THC products derived from hemp. The $24 billion industry is now scrambling to save itself before the ban takes effect a year from now. A loophole in the 2018 farm bill allowed products containing THC to spread across the country. That’s been a lifeline for some breweries that have turned to canning THC-infused beverages, but it’s also prompted concern about sales of intoxicating products at gas stations an convenience stores across the country.

Odermatt won the opening giant slalom last month. It’s an ominous start to the season by the world’s best men’s skier leading up to the Milan Cortina Olympic Games in February. Odermatt made up time in the final section to overhaul Vincent Kriechmayr and win by 0.08 seconds. Kilde has been sidelined because of the effects of injuries sustained in a downhill crash in January 2024. Shiffrin was seen weeping as Kilde crossed the line 1.25 seconds adrift of Odermatt.

Santa Fe tackles rental rates with first-in-US minimum wage approach

Santa Fe is the first city in the U.S. to directly link wages to housing affordability, aiming to counter high rents. The ordinance was signed into law earlier this month. It ties minimum wage increases not only to consumer prices but also to fair market rental prices. The mayor says it’s part of a broader city initiative aimed at ensuring that people who work in Santa Fe can also afford to live there. New Mexico’s capital city is not alone. Rising housing costs and rental rates have made affordability a top issue for families and policymakers.

How trading wild turkeys for other animals became a conservation success story

Swapping turkeys for other animals was once a key part of North America’s wildlife conservation efforts. The wild turkey population dwindled to a few thousand in the late 1800s but has since grown to about 7 million across 49 states, plus more in Canada and Mexico. Restoration often relied on trades. For example, Oklahoma swapped walleye and prairie chickens for turkeys from Arkansas and Missouri. New Hampshire sent fishers to West Virginia in exchange for turkeys. Early efforts to raise turkeys on farms failed, leading to capturing and relocating wild turkeys, which proved successful.

Trump says he’s barring South Africa from participating in next year’s G20 summit near Miami

President Donald Trump says he’s barring South Africa from participating in the Group of 20 summit next year near Miami. He also says he’ll “stop all payments and subsidies” to the country over its treatment of a U.S. government representative at this year’s global meeting. Trump chose not to have an American delegation attend the recent summit hosted by South Africa. He said he did so because white Afrikaners were being violently persecuted. It’s a claim that South Africa, which was mired for decades in racial apartheid, has rejected as baseless. South Africa says Trump’s statement is “regrettable.”

Girls flag football is finally catching on. Florida high schools were 20 years early

Right now, girls flag football is spreading like wildfire into American high schools, helped along by millions of dollars from benefactors like Nike and the NFL. But for Florida, it’s nothing new. Girls have been playing flag football there for over 20 years, and recent participation numbers in the state have over 10,000 girls across four divisions and more than 450 schools. As girls flag football spreads across the country, Florida both begs and answers the question: How big can this sport get?
